The rookery was loaded with wading birds flying around with to bring back nesting material, in addition to food. While most of the birds were flying, a few decided to forage along the water line directly in front of me. This Great Blue Heron wandered within 8 feet of me at the waters edge and I was able to get a detailed headshot before it flew back to the nest with a stick. These birds are some of the largest we have in Southwest Florida, and their bills are extremely sharp. Great Blue Herons will hunt just about anything that they can spear with their beak... also something was up with this one’s eye, I think it may have had a concussion or fight at some point that damaged it.
