The rookery was loaded with wading birds flying around with to bring back nesting material, in addition to food. While most of the birds were flying, a few decided to forage along the water line directly in front of me. This Great Blue Heron wandered within 8 feet of me at the waters edge and I was able to get a detailed headshot before it flew back to the nest with a stick. Great Blue Herons are formidable hunters, using their sharp, spear-like beaks to catch almost anything within reach. Standing among the largest birds in Southwest Florida, they’re truly impressive to observe. This particular heron, however, had an unusual look in its eye—possibly the lingering effect of an injury, perhaps from a past concussion or confrontation.
