A roseate spoonbill lifts gracefully into flight, scanning the wetlands for food to bring back to its nest. The sky that day was a flat white, hazy overcast that offered little light to work with. At the time, I remember feeling frustrated by the absence of blue skies and golden sunlight. But years later, while revisiting my collection of spoonbill images, I stumbled upon this 2019 shot and saw it with fresh eyes. What once felt like a limitation now lends the image a quiet, almost ethereal mood.
