Finding burrowing owls on natural perches is very difficult in Southwest Florida, as many of the burrowing owls live on undeveloped residential home lots. Typically the lot will be almost completely cleared and the burrowing owls will be left with just a few manmade t-perches to get some elevation and better locate their prey.
Many of the residential lots have now been developed on Marco Island as land becomes more and more scarce for undeveloped homesites. This particular morning I happened to capture one of the adults perched on a small tree branch after fending off a loggerhead shrike who was too close to the nest.
